It's one thing to be high atop a mountain in the Adirondacks. It's another thing to be high while you are on top of a mountain in the Adirondacks.

There are many ways to celebrate the end of one year and the hope of the next. Some go to the movies, some throw a party at home and some head out into nature. If you are to choose the nature hike, on New Year's Eve or any other day of the Winter season, the Adirondacks are no joke.

On Friday December 31st, New York Department of Environmental Conservation's Ray Brook Dispatch received a call from Essex County regarding a group of teenagers, in the vicinity of Marcy Dam, in need of help.

Details of the call are scarce but some of the information indicated that this was a group of 19-year-olds reporting that one member of their party was suffering from alcohol poisoning.

Forest Rangers responded to the call and arrived on scene at approximately 6pm. With the sun setting around 4:30pm it must have been dark for quite a while in those woods. Once the Rangers had a chance to assess the scene they determined that at least 3 of the teens were intoxicated and they weren't just drunk.

Upon further investigation some of the teens admitted to drinking alcohol and taking hallucinogens. They were TRIPPING! This created a number of issues and a potentially life-threating situation. Rangers helped get one teen to an ambulance while the others were taken to New York State Police.
