Take out your wallet and place any bills you have on the table. Any denomination is fine, $100, $10, $5. Take a close look at the face of the bill and then flip it over to the back side. Do you see anything unusual? You probably don't see anything out of the ordinary so how would you know if your money is fake?

A New York man recently used a $100 bill at a convenience store and was arrested because the money is counterfeit.

According to the New York State Police a man entered a Kwik Fill, in the town of Cortlandville, on Wednesday June 22nd. When the individual paid for his items the store clerk noticed something odd about the money and called the police.

The store clerk offered a description of the man and officers set out to find him. Upon locating the suspect it was revealed that he had a total of six individual $100 dollar bills in his possession and each were determined to be counterfeit.

New York State Police arrested Anthony J. Fenton, age 36, of Cortlandville, NY. Fenton is being charged with class “C” felony of Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument in the first degree. This charge suggests that Fenton was aware that the money is fake. He now faces up to 15 years in prison.

Identifying fake money is not simple. There are a few things to look for however and that includes the feel of the paper, looking for color-shifting ink and checking the watermarks. Keep in mind that if you become in possession of counterfeit money there is no reimbursement. You won't be able to exchange the fake for the a real bill.
