Giants’ Jason Garrett Awkwardly Tells Media to ‘Call Him Coach’

Ah yes, press conferences. The gift that keeps on giving for awkward and hilarious encounters between media and sports figures.

The most recent awkward encounter comes from New York Giants' offensive coordinator, Jason Garrett. Oops, allow me to re-phrase. It comes from Giants' offensive coordinator, Coach Jason Garrett.

Why the emphasis on "Coach," you ask? Allow me to show you.

When you address Jason Garrett, you better make sure you call him Coach first.

Now, I think it's obvious at this point that I am poking fun at "Coach" in this instance. More specifically, though, I'm poking fun at people who thought this was a big deal. A number of media members came out in his defense, saying that based on their experiences with Jason Garrett during past seasons, he isn't the kind of person to demand being called "coach" by other people.

I liked this explanation, as well.

No matter how many times I've watched it, it doesn't seem like there is any malice intended by Coach Garrett. Rather, he's a bit surprised that the media members didn't respond to him when he said "good to see you guys" to end his media availability. In that case, I completely understand where Garrett is coming from. Yes, he is a coach with the Giants, and the other people in the room are there to interview him. All of the people in the room, however, are human beings, and Jason Garrett is attempting to establish that relationship early in the season.

That being said, part of me wishes he really does demand to be called "coach" everywhere he goes. Can you imagine that? Maybe, his kids call their parents Mom and Coach. Maybe, people who attend lunch meetings with Garrett have to ask "coach" to pass the salt.

The mental images are endless, and there's a small part of me that wishes the second scenario was true. The first, however, makes a lot more sense, so calm down.
