South Glens Falls Marathon Dance Gets New Location After 44 Yrs
One of the coolest and most successful fundraisers in the Capital Region is getting a new location to adhere to COVID protocols. Last year, the South High Marathon Dance was one of the last events held before everything shut down. The students were able to raise over $800,000. They weren't sure if they would be able to hold this amazing event again, but they have a plan in place with help from the Great Escape.
Every year the fundraiser is held in the South Glens Falls gym, but because of certain COVID protocols, the students, faculty, and organizers needed to find an outdoor space big enough to accommodate the hundreds of participants. That's when Six Flags Great Escape stepped in. Instead of being held over a weekend, the event will be on Friday, April 30th for the entire day.
According to the Post Star, the event will be held under the four large pavilions and the catering building to make sure that everyone is socially distant, wearing masks, and protective equipment. Everyone that is a part of the fundraiser will also have to have a negative COVID test 72 hours before the event.
Here are the organizations that will benefit from this year's Marathon Dance:
- Alzheimer’s Association of Northeast New York
- American Red Cross of Northeast New York
- Angel Names Association
- Big Brothers Big Sisters
- Cancer Center Community Crusader
- Jeanne Feline Corp
- Moreau Community Center
- Operation Adopt A Soldier
- Rebuilding Together Saratoga County
- Saratoga Center for the Family
- South Glens Falls Kindness Closet
No word on if they get too hot, they can cool off in the Desperado Plunge. My guess is that they are sticking to those designated areas. The Great Escape has helped out the past few years when the Marathon Dance was held at the high school with security equipment.
Six Flags Great Escape Resort President Rebecca Wood said:
This is a staple event for our community and our team could not be more excited to support the Bulldog family as they work hard to make a difference despite the challenges this pandemic has presented. We are honored to kick off the 2021 season at The Great Escape by partnering with SHMD.
This will be the 44th annual South High Marathon Dance which has raised close to 8 million dollars for various charities since it began in 1978.
