I saw this scam being discussed on Reddit and I have to admit I'm pretty impressed. It's a scam to get free parking on a college campus and apparently it's happening in college campus parking lots all over the country including New York.

At a few colleges if you drive an electric vehicle (EV) you get to park in one of the designated charging parking spaces that are placed upfront in the parking lot. In addition, some colleges are waving the parking permit fee for students and facilities that drive EV cars to campus. That seems like a nice little bonus for doing something good for our environment.

However, there is always someone out there that is scamming the system and figured out a way to take advantage of the system.

Apparently, industrious people with 3D printers are printing fake charging ports that you can bolt to a non-electric vehicle. Then you can parking in a charging spot, hook up the charging cable to your fake charging port. Using the fake charging port gets you a primo spot and you avoid paying for a $250 parking permit.

This doesn't just work at college parking lots either. People are doing it at malls, grocery stores, movie theaters, and hospitals.

Part of me is like, "shame on you" and part of me is like, "good for you for scamming the system". If you don't have a 3D printer to make a fake charging port, you can actually buy them on Amazon. Of course, the ones sold on Amazon are supposed to be used to hang up your home charging cord....or at least that's what they say in the description.

If you do consider jumping on this scam just be warned you can be ticketed, fined, and even towed for parking a non-electric vehicle in an EV charging spot.
