I am a man that does not like surprises but I do enjoy the reactions of others when caught off guard and I certainly like to see good things happen to good people. Colonie resident Bill Day is a U.S. Navy veteran, having served some of his time in Operation Desert Storm. On Veterans Day Mr. Day received a call that would change his life! His mortgage was paid in full by Lieutenant Dan!

In 1994 we got to know fictional Vietnam veteran, Lieutenant Dan from the film "Forrest Gump". This character was Forrest's platoon leader in Vietnam and eventual shrimp boat business partner in the Bubba-Gump Shrimp Company. As with most movies, much of that story was fantasy portrayed on film. Sometimes, it seems, these characters stay with the actors. Such could be the case with actor Gary Sinise. Gary brought countless roles to life over his 40 year career, including that of Lieutenant Dan Taylor. Since playing that part Sinise has been heavily involved in helping our veterans through various organizations.

Veterans Day 2020 was unlike the rest for Bill Day as he got a call from Gary Sinise with the news that he and his organization, the Gary Sinise Foundation, would be paying off Mr. Day's mortgage through Veterans United Home Loans!

The Gary Sinise Foundation is a non-profit organization that meets the needs of service members, veterans and their families. They do this in a variety of ways from building homes to paying off mortgages. This year they were able to pay the mortgage for 10 total veterans around the United States. One way that you can help is to Tweet #thankyouforyourservice and Veterans United contributes $25 to the mortgage funds.

According to WNTY.com Day is a single dad with 4 kids who purchased their Colonie home just 2 years ago. On behalf of the Capital Region, thank you for your service Mr. Day. Surprise!
