Due to a production error, the number of Johnson & Johnson vaccine doses is about to take a plunge.

As the state races to get as many residents vaccinated as quickly as possible, fewer vaccines coming to the state is news health officials do not want to hear. Governor Cuomo announced today that due a production issue the number of Johnson & Johnson vaccines arriving in New York are expected to drop 88% next week. Officials do not expect any appointment cancellations due to the drop. If anything it seems the shortage will only slow slow the rate at which vaccines are increased.

For many, the convenience of only need one shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is making it the more attractive option versus the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines which require 2 shots. As far as the effectiveness of the shots, the Pfizer and Moderna shots have a higher rate of preventing infection, but it has been well documented that the Johnson and Johnson shot is just as are effective as the others when it comes to preventing severe infection and hospitalization.

At this point, officials are just encouraging residents to get the shot as all 3 offer significant protection against COVID. So in the coming weeks, you just may need to go for one of the 2 dose options in an effort to get your vaccination wrapped up as soon as possible!
