May In Albany To Kick Off With Snowflakes

The words May and snow just do not sound right together.

First, we certainly are not talking about snowmageddon here in Albany for May 1st. But, if you are fully ready for Spring and the warmer weather, just reading or hearing the word snow is probably aggravating. Or maybe like me, seeing a couple of spring snowflakes is just a crazy sight you love to see. Either way, some flakes will be coming our way for the first day of May.

The current National Weather Service forecast for this weekend is calling for cool and breezy weather Friday night into early Saturday morning and then you guessed it - some snow mixing with rain after Midnight. The Capital Region and lower elevations shouldn't see any accumulation, but higher elevations in the Adirondacks could see an inch or so. The Old Forge forecast is calling for an inch of accumulation.

Even as we head into May, our chances of seeing more flakes fly are pretty good. The National Weather Service says the record in Albany for the latest measurable snow was set on May 18, 2002, with a little over 2 inches of accumulation. The record for the latest trace amount of snow was set on May 28th back in 1902!

Let's just hope we don't have any Upstate New York weather insanity early Saturday morning. that tends to come into play when there are just a few flakes in the forecast.
