As many New Yorkers continue to struggle to pay their rent or mortgage payment, the state has extended measures to help keep them in their homes.

According to a Times Union report, the moratorium on evictions and foreclosures was set to end on October 1st. This has now been extended to January 1st, 2021. The "Tenant Safe Harbor Act" prevents landlords from evicting tenants who cannot pay their rent, and also protects homeowners from foreclosure. Some are critical of this measure as well, as the Times Union reports it does not cover everyone who could be facing eviction or foreclosure.

First, it is crazy that the pandemic has lasted this long and we are still at a critical point where these measures are necessary. I don't think any of us believed we would still be in this spot 6 months down the road. I also can appreciate what this measure means to those who may still be struggling to play their monthly housing payment. The fear of losing the most basic and important necessity of a roof over your head I would imagine is daunting. Especially for those with children!

If you have been employed through the whole pandemic, you certainly have something to be thankful for. I know I have counted my blessings for the last 6 months that my family and I have been able to stay on course with all the challenges around us. Let's hope come of these measures keep giving others that same level of comfort in the coming months as we continue to navigate the pandemic.
