Open Since 1913 Legendary Albany Restaurant is Temporarily Closing its Doors

A staple restaurant in downtown Albany is going to be closing its doors for much-needed renovations. The restaurant has been in Albany since 1913 and the building is even older so third-generation owner Brad Rosenstein says it's time to do some upgrades. Jack's Oyster House will have to temporarily close.

What Renovations Will Be Done?

Brad Rosenstein who is the grandson of the original owner of Jack's Oyster House and now runs the restaurant told News 10 ABC that they plan on doing big things. The building is in dire need of renovations because it was built in 1875. They also plan to build a new speakeasy upstairs from the restaurant.

When & For How Long Will Jack's Oyster House Be Closed?

They plan on closing Jack's Oyster House on September 1st. They aren't sure how long the renovations will take but plan on being closed for a few months. This is so they can get all of the necessary upgrades done.

What is the History Behind Jack's Oyster House?

Jack Rosenstein was once an oyster shucker at a different restaurant and then opened Jack's Oyster House on the corner of Beaver and Green Streets in Albany. Coffee, back then, only cost pennies and the most expensive meal on the menu was just thirty-five cents according to their website. Then he moved it to State Street and the one hundred fifty-seat restaurant has been an iconic staple in downtown Albany ever since.

Jack's Oyster House is a Family Affair

For over one hundred years, Jack's Oyster House has been in the Rosenstein family. For three generations they have been operating the restaurant. The current owner is Jack's grandson, Brad who is a graduate of Cornell and makes sure that the family traditions and the integrity of the restaurant continues. He is also introducing current flavors for new guests.

After the renovations, the goal is to welcome back those who love the Jack's Oyster House food and atmosphere while introducing some modern upgrades.
