Did you know that you can have a job, get paid for your work AND collect unemployment benefits? Back in January the state of New York implemented a new rule regarding part-time work making it possible for residents to work and collect. This week the rules have been modified.

According to the Department of Labor, there are a few things to keep in mind in order to get paid and collect. For example, if you were unemployed the week starting August 16, 2021, but you found part-time work these are the guidelines you will need to follow.

  • Work 30 hours or less
  • Earn less than $504 gross pay
  • You can work up to 7 days each week without losing full unemployment benefits
  • Benefits will not be reduced for each day you engage in part-time work.
  • Benefits will be reduced in increments based on your total hours of work for the week
  • This is effective August 16, 2021 and forward
  • Collect Unemployment Insurance

The next step is to determine how much you will be able to collect. Starting this Sunday, August 22, 2021, unemployed New Yorkers will report using the updated hours matrix. This is how that will work:

  • Work 10 hours or less and you don't have to report anything. It's as if you didn't work.
  • Work between 11-16 hours and report 1 day of work. Benefits will be reduced by 25%
  • Work between 17-21 hours and report 2 days of work. Benefits will be reduced by 50%
  • Work between 22-30 hours and report 3 days of work. Benefits will be reduced by 75%
  • Work over 30 hours and report 4 days of work. Benefits will be reduced by 100%
