In late September, October and November of 2001, sports were an escape.
The United States found itself grieving, fresh off of a string of attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The nation was shaken to its core, and had little to brighten its collective spirit. Players on the New York Yankees and New York Mets were thrust into a role much larger than they had signed up for. The teams had to be sources of hope, sources of happiness, and sources of relief every time they touched the field.
Ever since 2001, September 11th has meant a bit extra in the baseball world. Now, 20 years later, the Subway Series took to Citi Field, as the Yankees and Mets renewed their city rivalry, while also remembering the tragic times into which their respective franchises became so engrained.
The ceremony on Saturday was powerful and moving, and here are ten photos that moved me.
