December is here and the countdown is on to Christmas Day. The big question is will we have a good chance at having a white Christmas in Albany?

So today I got the first sign that the Christmas season is un full swing: my kiddos Emmett and Scarlett both opened day 1 of their advent calendars. That means it is also time to start dreaming of a white Christmas. Now the utimate white Christmas would be to actually have a snowfall from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day, but for most having snow on the ground is the baseline qualification for an official white Christmas.

Will Albany Have A White Christmas This Year?

Every year forecasters look at historical averages and weather patterns that are occurring in the current season to put their early white Christmas forecast and odds together, and Accuweather has done just that. And the news is pretty good for Albany. According to their prediction, Albany and the greater Capital Region, especially to the north, has about a 75 percent chance of having snow on the ground on December 25th. This reduction is based on the La Nina weather pattern we have this year, which is actually driving up our odds for a white Christmas.

The National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) prediction for a white Christmas (Which the say is 1 inch of snow on the ground on Dec. 25th) puts the odds around 60-75 percent, depending on what part of the Capital Region and Upstate New York you live in.

Whatever prediction you go by, the odds are well in your favor this year if you are dreaming of a white Christmas. Maybe if you put that Christmas spirit into overdrive it will push those odds to 100 percent!
