Winners in Saturday Sectionals in Capital Region Girls HS Hoops

There were nasty snow squalls mixed in with some bone-chilling wind but that didn't stop the teams playing on the first sectional Saturday of 2022. The Section 2 high school basketball championships continued on schedule. There were 16 games on the docket, all in girls basketball.

Lets start with the Class B match-ups. Top seeded Schalmont blasted 17th seeded Bishop Maginn 91-25 and 8th seeded Tamarac beat the 9th seed Johnstown 61-50. (8) Tamarac will travel to (1) Schalmont on Wednesday at 7:30pm for quarterfinal action. The #2 seed Mechanicville took care of business with a 87-51 victory over the 15th seed, Greenville and the #7 seed Broadalbin-Perth got by the 10th seed Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk 39-28. (7) Broadalbin-Perth will travel to (2) Mechanicville for that match-up on Wednesday at 7:30pm. 3rd seeded Catskill shut down the #14 seed Cohoes 54-28, while 6th seed Fonda-Fultonville defeated #11 Schuylerville 60-40. (6) Fonda-Fultonville will travel to (3) Catskill on Wednesday for a 6pm tip on their quarterfinal game. In the final bracket, 4th seeded Icabod Crane whacked #13 Voorheesville 69-34, as 5th seeded Albany Academy snuck by #12 Glens Falls 57-56 in a thriller. (5) Albany Academy will travel to (4) Icabod Crane on Wednesday. That will be a 6pm tip-off.

Now on to Class C, where the top seed Duanesburg shut down #17 Hadley-Luzurne 72-29, while 8th seeded Cambridge knocked off #9 Mayfield 53-42. (8) Cambridge will have the daunting task of traveling to (1) Duanesburg, who has been incredibly tough all year, for a 7:30pm tip-off on Wednesday. 2nd seeded Greenwich convincingly defeated the #15 seed Galway 89-24, as #7 Chatham knocked off 10th seeded Warrensburg 48-36. (7) Chatham will head to (2) Greenwich on Wednesday for their 7:30pm match-up. 3rd seeded Berne-Knox-Westerlo beat the #14 seed Rensselaer 52-38, while the only upset of the day happened. 11th seeded Schoharie upended #6 seed Whitehall 48-40. (11) Schoharie will travel to (3) Berne-Knox-Westerlo for a tough match-up Wednesday at 6pm. In the final bracket, 4th seeded Corinth took care of #13 Hoosic Valley 43-27, while the #5 seed, Maple Hill, got by the #12 seed Hoosick Falls 54-47. (5) Maple Hill will travel to (4) Corinth on Wednesday. That game will be a 5:30 tip-off. Good luck to all of the student-athletes.
